AIM Bot

Published by Spencer at 10:19 pm under Personal ramblings

I wrote an AIM Bot in collaboration with Audrey and Kathryn. It’s been fun. “Meeebot” understands the words insult, compliment, spell, dictionary, thesaurus, quote, inspiration, stock, deal, word, and feedback. It also does horoscopes, plays “Rock Paper Scissors,” gives you local weather for your zip code, and will try to answer any question you ask!

Check it out. Send an IM on AIM to “Meeebot“.

I tried your bot out and it’s great. Nice work. One question I have is, where are you pulling all the data from? I’m interested in creating a bot, but I honestly don’t know from where/how I can pull data and use it legally. Any advice you can offer would be really appreciated. I’m completely new to bot building, so I really am looking for any guidance you can offer.

    Thanks!!!

    Hi Doug,

I looked around alot for content, and my daughters wrote a bunch of it. dict.org has public domain dictionary/thesaurus content. HamWeater has free weather stuff (given that you set it up on a server and hack to get at the data in the format you want). PHP has a spell checker, and webservicex.net offers free quotes. You “just” have to look had and do some work.
